RAPID CITY, S.D. – A welcome home ceremony for three Soldiers with the South Dakota Army National Guard’s 216th Engineer Detachment (Firefighting Team) is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16, at 3 p.m. at Joint Force Headquarters on Camp Rapid.
The public is encouraged to attend the event as the Rapid City-based unit returns from a nine month deployment to Romania.
Planned speakers for the ceremony include Lt. Gov. Matt Michels and Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, SDNG adjutant general.
While deployed, the 216th provided command and control of assigned or attached firefighting teams to provide fire protection of aviation assets, facilities and installations in the European Command area of operation.
The Soldiers returned stateside to Fort Bliss, Texas, May 6, where they have been completing demobilization requirements before to returning back to South Dakota.
Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, this is the second deployment for the 216th, which also served in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2003-June 2005.
This will be a 2 part mission:
10:45 AM Assembly at the Rapid City Regional Airport cell phone parking lot.
11:00 AM proceed to the Airport
11:15 AM Set up Flag Line
12:30 PM Flag Line Dismissed
01:45 PM Assembly at the Pete Lein Baseball Field behind the Guard Camp.
02:00 PM Proceed to the Joint Force Headquarters Building
03:30 PM Flag Line dismissed.
These times are subject to change so check for updates. Camp Rapid has excluded us from the safety requirements so helmets are not required bring flags for your bikes.
