The family of Vernon L. Thompson has requested the Patriot Guard Riders to honor Vernon with a flag line showing our appreciation and respect for his service to our great Nation. After graduating from high school in 1962, Vernon joined the U.S. Army and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After basics, Vern was commissioned and sent to radio training in Fort Jackson, SC. Upon completion, he continued to Fort Benning, GA, where he was placed in the Airborne Paratroop Division. In 1963, the 173rd Infantry Brigade was activated, and Vern was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
A Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 15 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14 at the funeral home in Sioux Falls. Interment will be at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Rural Sioux Falls. The Visitation and the Memorial Service will be “flags only”.
